Flat Screen Monitors and How They Work

It's hard even imagine back in the day when we had these huge bulky monitors that took up so much space on our desks. It is no doubt that flat panel monitors are a huge improvement on the old bulky screens.

But, what changed? Why are we able to have such smaller screen now, and how do they even have a better picture in most cases? The difference is one of technology. Older screens, also known as CRT screens, had vacuum tubes, just like non flat panel TV have these days. Vacuum tubes are an old school way to conduct electricity, and in this case, to present a picture through electrical charges.

However, very few things run on vacuum tubes these days. In fact, we have moved on from vacuum tubes to transistors to microchips now. The advent of microchips, combined with LCD, or liquid crystal display, technology, now allows us to watch our televisions, use our computers, and even look at our cell phones differently.

With LCD, there is no need for so much space in the back of the screen for tubes or the electrons that vacuum tubes move around. Now, microchips simply tell the different pieces of the liquid crystal display, or pixels, how to display.

An LCD monitor is comprised of a backlight and a polarized glass sheet, followed by a layer of colored pixels. After that comes the liquid crystal solution (the liquid crystal display part). This reacts to a grid of coordinates sent by the computer to the monitor. These particles will open or close when sent stimuli from electrical charges of various degrees. This allows light to pass through pixels of color to light up the screen, which gives you the color picture.

If you were able to look closely enough (and you can't with your naked eye), you would see that your lcd monitor is not one contiguous display, but it is rather made up of those very tiny pixels, each one corresponding to a different color. We see it as an overall display since they are so small.

Think of it this way – the old vacuum tube televisions had pixels, too, but they had to be more spaced out because of the limitations of the old tech. Remember what it would look like when you got too close to a big screen television? It became distorted because the pixels were so spread apart, and you could actually see them. Same concept here, except there is no way you can get close enough to a flat screen monitor to see those pixels.

Since the display is better and has more pixels packed in on a flat panel, you can even see it at farther viewing angles, because your brain still processes it as a full picture. Also, colors are richer because there are literally more of each color.

There are some serious advantages. One, they use much less electricity. As mentioned above, they also use much less space, and the picture is better. If you are still using an old CRT monitor, throw that thing out (actually, recycle it please!) and get a flat screen monitor!

Your thin flat panel TV can grace your room by hanging on the wall like a piece of art, or it can sit on a trendy stand, catching everyone's eye when they enter the room, or just rest sedately on a table. But the technologies that go into flat panel TVs, namely LCD and plasma have their own pros and cons, depending on the application. Flat panel LCD TVs and flat panel monitors for computers use the same technology liquid crystal display which produces sharp and bright images in most lighting types.

LCD technology Popular Choice

LCDs shine light through pixel cells that have a red, green and blue component, but they cannot turn off certain pixels. Hence, the ability of LCDs to produce a pure black is less, which in turn has an effect on contrast levels. If the LCD panel is more than 40 inches wide, they are obviously more expensive than flat panel plasma TVs and rear projection TVs. But they are affordable when you look for 15-21 inch-wide screens for smaller rooms. Major manufacturers who make these are Sharp, Philips, Dell, Samsung, Sony, etc.

The main advantages of liquid crystal display panels are that they are lightweight, thin and do not consume much power. CRT or conventional cathode ray tube monitors are being used lesser and lesser because of the obvious advantages of flat panel LCDs over them. LCD displays are mostly TFT panels or thin film transistor LCDs, an active matrix. They have the property of high quality displays and smaller size, which is what makes them popular for many uses.

Plasma Flat Panel TVs

The other flat panel option - Plasma TVs - look very elegant and streamlined. You can choose the best from Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Philips, and Hitachi etc. whose wide screens can be anything from 36 inches to about 70 inches. These are renowned for their color accuracy and can be viewed from anywhere in the room. They pass an electric charge to cells filled with gas, which in turn respond with a burst of ultraviolet light to produce images; hence plasma TVs are said to be prone to the burn in phenomenon.

Flat Panel TV LCD Or Plasma Which Is Better?

Flat panel TVs have great advantages in terms of being thinner and lighter making them a better option in terms of flexibility in placement. The digital display quality is precisely controlled producing an amazing array of colors. They are immune to magnetic picture distortions, so you don't have to worry about putting them close to speakers that are not shielded. Flat panel TVs give you good image focus making straight lines look straight. About the only downside is the fact that flat panel TVs are costlier than conventional TVs. So thin is definitely in with both LCD and Plasma TVs. Plasma TVs are invariably larger than LCDs and have a wider viewing angle. In terms of brightness, LCD panels are better when lights are bright. Plasma TVs produce blacker blacks.

This is the time prices are getting more and more affordable, since prices for LCD and Plasma TV are decreasing quite fast.

I have an emachine pc about 4 years old. It came with one of those standard big bulky monitors that has a flat screen, but I want to save space on my desktop. Is it easy to change over to a flat panel monitor?
